Please note: These are the norms for candidates for seminary studies for the Archdiocese of Louisville. Some exceptions are possible.

Initial Requirements

Member of the Roman Catholic Church for at least 3 years.

A candidate must be between 18-55.

Single, widower, or divorced with a formal declaration of nullity.

High school diploma, GED or equivalent.

Good physical and mental health required and certified by healthcare professionals.

  1. Catechized in a general manner.
  2. Evidence of a prayer life.
  3. Belongs to a parish.
  4. Participates at least weekly in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
  5. Regular Reception of the Sacrament of Penance. 
  1. Desire to grow in holiness in preparation to be a holy priest and spiritual father as a pastor.
  2. Fundamental sense of the Church's mission and a generous willingness and enthusiasm to promote it.
  3. Sensitivity to the needs of others and a desire to respond to them.
  4. Willingness to initiate action and assume a position of pastoral leadership for the good of individuals and communities.

  8. Apply to Seminary (Approval of Seminary)
